All of the team at WSM, and many of you, will have been saddened at the news of the death of Dr Jane Goodall who passed away on 1 October.
Dr Jane, as she is known to millions of Americans, was a trailblazer in so many respects. Jane’s work transformed our understanding of our closest living relative, the chimpanzee, and profoundly changed the way we study animals, notably Jane achieved this at a time when women were not recognised in the male dominated scientific community. Jane was also a global advocate for human rights, animal welfare, species and environmental protection and one of the world’s foremost conservationists . Honours have been bestowed recognising Jane and her work, including appointment as a UN Messenger of Peace and as a Dame Commander of the British Empire, as have awards from across the world such as the US Presidential Medal of Freedom, the French Légion d’honneur, the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Science, Japan’s prestigious Kyoto Prize, the Ghandi-King Award for Nonviolence and The Medal of Tanzania.
Jane founded the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), a charity which promotes and supports animal welfare and conservation projects, and Roots & Shoots, a global humanitarian and environmental programme for young people of all ages. Today there are over 25 JGI offices around the world and Roots & Shoots is active in over 75 countries.
The partners and team at WSM have been working with Jane and the Jane Goodall Institute for almost twenty years. We have provided trusteeship to The Jane Goodall Institute UK, assisted in establishing the Jane Goodall Institute, Global and we continue our professional support of the day to day operations of JGI.
Simon Marsh knew Jane well and commented, “It is rare in life to meet such a truly awe-inspiring titan and it was a privilege to know Jane and to have played a part in promoting the work she has inspired”. Remebering Jane
Amanda graduated from Brunel University, with a joint honours degree, achieving a BSC and BA degree in Leisure Management and Television and film studies. Amanda started her career in a customer service role before joining the hotel group Le Meridien as an Events coordinator, she was in the hotel industry for seven years and during her time won an award from a major international airline for her outstanding attitude and dedication to customer service, which she achieved while working for the Rezidor hotel group in the position of Airline Crew Manager. Amanda has over 20 years experience in customer relations and event management.
