Wombledon Rounders Tournament 2014

The weather forecast promised storms but we were delighted instead with beautiful sunshine – a perfect setting for the annual Wombledon Rounders Tournament at the Old Wimbledonians Association Ground near Raynes Park. The event, hosted by Hartley Fowler, sees twelve local firms put forward teams of men, women and children to play a friendly but highly competitive tournament!

Our team captain Andrew Bithray organised a pre tournament practice session the lunch time before to test out our rusty skills. This proved to be a good idea as for many of the WSM team (Wimbledon Super Mavericks), it had been a long time since we had picked up a rounders bat!

The evening began with a challenging first game against the defending champions – Wimbledon Village Stables. We managed to get off to a good start however with a solid win. After this, we got into our stride, knocking the ball out of the park and scoring plenty of rounders. As a result, we managed to win both our second and third games… And then the tense moment came when the scores were drawn up and the semi-finals teams were announced.  Surely with winning all our games we would make it out of the group stages this year?!

The results were put up and we made it through! In the semi final, we were up against the competitive Peacocks team and it was an incredibly close call but we pulled through and moved onto the final where we were up against the New Wimbledon Theatre.  The final match saw some dramatic moments including Louisa Edwardes winding the opposition’s bowler, but we managed to get some good runs in resulting in the Wimbledon Super Mavericks winning the match and the tournament!

It was a fantastic evening and a big well done to all who took part. Thank you to everyone who came down to support us. Special mentions also to our mini team mascot Poppy Redfern (Sharon’s daughter) and Hollie Luck who won most dedicated player as it took her almost 2 hours to get the event due to one of the main rail lines not running.

We look forward to next year’s event where the Wimbledon Super Mavericks will definitely be back to defend our title!
