Raising Our Game with Merton Chamber

Thursday evening, we braved the rain to head up to the newly refurbished Cannizaro House Hotel where Merton Chamber of Commerce were holding their AGM. Despite the miserable weather, around 130 local businesses and professionals turned up for an interesting evening of networking.

After a brief reception we were ushered in to sit down and listen to Andrew Wakefield, Chair of Merton Chamber, outline  the key successes of 2014. The main draw of the evening though, was the theme of Raising Your Game through apprenticeships and various speakers took to the stage, including Angela Browne, who runs the Merton Chamber 'Take One' programme and Helen Clark Bell from Love Wimbledon. Finally, Mike Smith from McDonalds joined, giving an interesting presentation about why it is so important for businesses to support apprenticeship schemes.

Once the presentations were over, we headed into the Orangerie for a delicious summer buffet beautifully prepared by the new Hotel du Vin chefs: a selection of fresh salads, roast chicken, gilled salmon and new potatoes. There were plenty more opportunities for some serious networking and also time to admire the newly renovated Cannizaro House, which was originally built as a country house in the 18th century and over the years has been frequented by the likes of King George lll and William Pitt the younger.
