Meeting the judges – Merton Best Business Awards

Be a judge they said. Get on stage they said. Get kitted out in a judges outfit and wig… they failed to mention. Last Thursday myself, along with four other innocent judges, were put up on stage in front of attendees of the 'Meet the Judges' event hosted by Taste Restaurant at South Thames College, to better help applicants entering the Merton Best Business Awards understand the judging process. The evening also presented a section of Q&A so that the judges could be put on the spot and quizzed about any such detail of the application process.

The event was well attended with over 40 people in attendance, relaxed by the wonderful food and drink in constant supply by the South Thames College students.

If you were fortunate enough to have missed me in fancy dress, here are some of the top tips from the judges:

  • Make sure you are answering all the criteria required.
  • Keep it concise and to the point, the judges will be going through lots of entries and won't want to have to search for the answers.
  • Be sure to include any necessary attachments – pictures, screen shots of website, financials etc.
  • Presentation is important – read through and ensure the grammar and spelling is correct. If you can, make sure somebody other than yourself reads through your application. Know an accountant? Get them to check over your figures to make sure they make sense.

The awards provide an excellent platform to market your business, giving the opportunity to showcase your achievements to customers and the industry. If you are interested in entering, please visit the website: www.mertonbestbusiness.co.uk.
